Frequently asked questions

What are the Roman numeral symbols?

I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1,000. Symbols are combined and added, with a smaller symbol before a larger one meaning subtraction, as in IV = 4.

Why does the converter stop at 3,999?

Standard Roman numerals use at most three of the same symbol in a row, so the largest standard value is MMMCMXCIX (3,999). Larger numbers need extra notation such as an overline.

What is 2026 in Roman numerals?

MMXXVI. That is MM (2,000), XX (20) and VI (6).

Is there a Roman numeral for zero?

No. The Roman system had no symbol for zero.

Why is IIII not accepted?

This tool uses the standard subtractive form, where 4 is IV. Clock faces sometimes show IIII, but it is not the standard form.
