Frequently asked questions

What is Base64?

Base64 is a way of writing binary data using 64 plain text characters (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, + and /). It lets data such as images or tokens travel safely through systems built for text.

Is Base64 encryption?

No. Anyone can decode it, so it gives no security. Never use it to hide passwords or secrets.

What is URL-safe Base64?

A variant that swaps + for – and / for _ and usually drops the = padding, so the value is safe inside a URL. JSON Web Tokens use it.

Does it handle emoji and non-English text?

Yes. Text is converted to UTF-8 bytes before encoding, so accents, other alphabets and emoji round-trip correctly.

Why does decoding sometimes fail?

The input may contain characters outside the Base64 alphabet, be cut short, or decode to bytes that are not text, such as an image.
