How to use the Password Generator
- Drag the slider to set the length. 16 characters or more is a good default for most accounts.
- Tick the character types you want. Leave all four on for the strongest result.
- A new password is generated whenever you change a setting. Click Generate password for another.
- Press Copy password, then save it in a password manager rather than a note or email.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a strong password be?
Length matters most. For important accounts, use at least 16 random characters. Longer is better, and a password manager means you never have to remember it.
Is this password generator safe?
The password is built in your browser with the Web Crypto random generator, the same source browsers use for security features. It is not sent over the network or stored by this page.
What does entropy mean here?
Entropy in bits estimates how many guesses an attacker would need. It is length multiplied by the log base 2 of the character pool size. Higher is harder to guess, and the label on this page is a rough guide, not a guarantee.
Should I use the same password on several sites?
No. If one site is breached, every account sharing that password is at risk. Use a unique password for each account.
Why avoid look-alike characters?
Characters such as O and 0, or l and 1, are easy to mix up when you type a password by hand. The option removes them, at a very small cost in strength.
