Frequently asked questions
What is SHA-256?
SHA-256 is a cryptographic hash function from the SHA-2 family. It turns any input into a fixed 64-character hexadecimal fingerprint (256 bits).
Is SHA-256 secure?
Yes, it is widely used and no practical attack is known against it. For storing passwords, though, use a slow purpose-built function such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2 rather than a plain SHA-256.
What is SHA-256 used for?
Verifying file integrity, digital signatures, certificates, blockchain systems and API request signing.
What is the difference between SHA-256 and MD5?
SHA-256 produces a longer 256-bit hash and has no known practical collision attacks. MD5 is 128 bits and is broken for security use.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The hash is computed in your browser.
