Frequently asked questions

What is an MD5 hash?

MD5 turns any input into a fixed 32-character hexadecimal fingerprint (128 bits). The same input always gives the same hash, and a tiny change gives a completely different one.

Is MD5 secure?

No. MD5 is broken for security uses because different inputs can be crafted to share a hash. Do not use it for passwords or signatures. Use SHA-256 or a password hashing function such as bcrypt or Argon2 instead.

What is MD5 still used for?

Checking that a file or text was not corrupted by accident, generating cache keys, and matching legacy systems that still expect MD5.

Can an MD5 hash be reversed?

Not by calculation, but short or common inputs can be looked up in precomputed tables, which is another reason not to use it for passwords.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The hash is computed in your browser.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded or stored by Nexatoolbox.
