Frequently asked questions

What is a UUID?

A UUID (universally unique identifier) is a 128-bit value written as 32 hexadecimal digits in five groups, such as 123e4567-e89b-42d3-a456-426614174000. It is used to label records, files and sessions without a central counter.

What is the difference between a UUID and a GUID?

They are the same format. GUID is the name Microsoft uses, while UUID is the name used in the standard and in most other ecosystems.

Which UUID version does this tool generate?

Version 4, which is built from random numbers. The 4 at the start of the third group marks the version.

Can two generated UUIDs be the same?

In practice no. A version 4 UUID has 122 random bits, so the chance of a repeat is vanishingly small for any realistic number of IDs.

Is this safe to use for production IDs?

The values come from your browser’s cryptographically secure random generator, so they are suitable for identifiers. Do not use a UUID on its own as a secret or password.
