Frequently asked questions
How does this word counter count words?
It splits your text on spaces, tabs and line breaks and counts each group of characters as one word. A hyphenated term such as well-known counts as one word.
Are spaces included in the character count?
The Characters figure includes spaces and punctuation. The Characters (no spaces) figure leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks. Pick the one your platform or assignment uses.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time assumes 225 words per minute and speaking time assumes 130 words per minute. These are rough planning averages, so real times vary with the reader and the material.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. All counting happens in your browser, so your text never leaves your device.
